Strong interest in Waikato River Authority project funding

The Waikato River Authority has this year received applications totalling $11.5 million for
projects to clean up the Waikato and Waipā Rivers.

It is one of the strongest rounds of funding applications to be recieved by the Authority.

There is up to $6 million available to be distributed as part of the 2022 annual funding
round.

There were a total of 42 applications received with the largest seeking $1.9 million of
funding with the smallest requesting $15 thousand. There is variety of applications received from a wide range of applicants including catchment groups, river iwi, landowners, community groups and businesses. Around half of the applications work towards implementing projects in the Waikato and Waipā River Restoration Strategy.

The projects will now undergo an evaluation process with funding decisions made by the Waikato River Authority Board in October.

Since the Authority was first established in 2010 it has funded approximately $60 million to around 400 projects.
